In 2004 I was panicking. I spent £5000 on a big Yellow Pages ad for my plumbing business. Despite the rep’s promises, we got zero phone calls. I had hardly any money left and overheads to meet.
Out of desperation, I tried pay per click advertising, mainly because it was new and cheap. Unlike Yellow Pages, my first efforts were not a complete disaster (just a small disaster). I was intrigued.
After months of learning (and to my business partner’s visible relief) Google Adwords was working well and our main source of leads. Things were looking up. We were booking £4-5k plumbing and heating jobs but spending less than £20 on AdWords to get them.
This lead to a couple of business awards as well as minor bits on the TV and in the press (including an embarrassing “plumber’s makeover” for the Independent – and a somewhat heated debate with a cameraman on ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover).
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I discovered what I was good at: digital and direct marketing.
In the years after, I’ve kept learning and used these skills to help my own businesses, as well as clients from all kinds of industries.
