You see most car owners (especially those who own high performance cars) think their car is more powerful than it really is. Here’s how it can happen:

Mistake #1: Believing the manufactures figures. All car manufactures BHP figures are overestimated – it helps sell cars, right? The mistake is taking these figures as gospel, when the actual measured power output is usually about 5% under.

Mistake #2: Assuming mods improve the power and guessing the power improvements. We’ve all read the magazine reviews… fit this and get an extra 7bhp, fit that and get an extra 5bhp… etc. The truth is, you’ll never know if modifying your car improves it, hurts it, or stays the same unless you dyno it before and after.

NOTE: Many cars with loads of expensive mods have been dyno’d and found to be just over standard BHP! Why? Because the engine wasn’t running correctly in the first place, and no amounts of ECU’s or exhausts are going to fix it.

TIP: Get your car dyno’d before doing any modifications!

Most other tuning companies think it’s easier to tell their customers “white lies” by using inaccurate dynos and letting them leave believing their car is pushing 15% more bhp than it really is. We believe this is misleading and dishonest.

"Why Is Your Dyno So Accurate?"

Here’s the technical bit…

Our Dyno is a Dyno Dynamics Rolling Road 1200 Wheel HP 900kW 2wd

We use full weather and atmospheric compensation.

Most rolling roads calculate from wheel hp to fly hp by using a coast down method. This can be very inaccurate because:

1. There is no load on the gear box, so you only calculate the friction losses in the tires and gear oil.

2 It’s open to abuse as all you need to do is touch the brakes or slightly pull the steering to increase drive losses making the fly wheel power (falsely) higher.

3. On big horse power cars, if you get any wheel spin the dyno see less wheel turns. Then on coast down, the dyno sees correct wheel turns so again it puts transmission losses high, and therefore a bigger hp read out.
